A Patient's Guide to Undergoing Spirometry Test: Understanding and Preparation

If you have been advised to undergo a spirometry test, it’s natural to have questions and concerns. To help you feel prepared and informed, we have put together this handy guide that outlines the process, benefits, and steps to ensure a successful spirometry test experience.

What is Spirometry? Spirometry is a non-invasive diagnostic test that measures lung function. It assesses how well you can breathe in and out, the volume of air you can inhale and exhale, and the speed of air flow. This test is commonly used to diagnose and monitor respiratory conditions such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and bronchitis.

Before the Test:

  1. Consultation: Discuss with us the need for the spirometry test, the type, and any specific instructions they may have.
  2. Medications: Provide us with any medications you are taking, including inhalers and we will advise you on whether you need to adjust your medication routine prior to the test.

On the Test Day:

  1. Clothing: Wear loose-fitting clothes that won’t restrict your breathing.
  2. Food and Drink: Avoid heavy meals or caffeinated beverages immediately before the test, as they can affect your breathing pattern.
  3. Smoking: Refrain from smoking for at least one hour before the test.

During the Test:

  1. Explanation: Our specialist will explain the procedure and answer any questions you may have.
  2. Positioning: You will be seated comfortably and asked to wear a nose clip to ensure accurate results.
  3. Breathing Technique: Follow the instructions provided by the healthcare professional, which usually involve taking a deep breath, sealing your lips around the mouthpiece, and exhaling forcefully and completely.

After the Test:

  1. Results: Our specialist and consultant will interpret the spirometry results and make a printed copy available for collection and presented to clinician. We will explain what the measurements mean for your lung function and any necessary treatment or lifestyle adjustments.

Remember, spirometry is a safe and painless test. It is essential to follow the instructions given by your our team to ensure accurate results. By undergoing spirometry, you are taking a proactive step towards understanding and managing your respiratory health.
