HAIR ANALYSIS FOR HEAVY METAL EXPOSURE

SAMPLE REQUIREMENT

In Ghana, the environmental devastation caused by illegal small-scale gold mining (galamsey) is not just an ecological issue; it is a profound public health emergency. The widespread contamination of water bodies, soil, and food chains with heavy metals like mercury (Hg), lead (Pb), arsenic (As), and cadmium (Cd) others makes population-level exposure inevitable. In this context, hair metal analysis transitions from a niche clinical tool to an essential component of public health monitoring and individual patient care.

Hair is a reliable record of past exposure to toxic elements like heavy metals. As hair grows, these elements are permanently incorporated into its structure. MMALABS provides a detailed analysis of this exposure with our comprehensive 16-metal hair test panel.

Aluminium Cadmium Manganese Thallium
Arsenic Cobalt Mercury Uranium
Barium Copper Nickle Vanadium
Bismuth Lead Selenium Zinc

Hair contains significantly higher concentrations of elements like heavy metals than blood or urine. While concentrations in blood and urine decline rapidly post-exposure, hair provides a stable matrix for assessing historical exposure, offering a chronological profile.

Scalp hair collection is non-invasive. To ensure analytical accuracy:

  • Refrain from chemical treatments (perms, colouring, bleach) for six weeks before sampling.

  • Prior to collection, wash hair with a non-medicated shampoo, rinse thoroughly with water, and allow it to air-dry without applying any styling products.

Who needs this Test?

This test is particularly relevant for individuals and professionals in the following contexts:

1. Individuals with Unexplained Chronic Symptoms:
People suffering from persistent health issues that have not been diagnosed through conventional means. Symptoms that may suggest heavy metal toxicity include:

  • Chronic fatigue and low energy

  • “Brain fog,” memory problems, and difficulty concentrating

  • Mood disorders, depression, or anxiety

  • Persistent headaches and neurological issues like numbness or tingling in extremities

  • Digestive problems (e.g., IBS-like symptoms)

  • Hair loss, skin rashes, and brittle nails

  • Muscle and joint pain

2. People with Known or Suspected Environmental Exposure:
This includes individuals who live, work, or have lived in environments with a high risk of contamination.

  • Occupational Exposure: Industrial workers (battery manufacturing, welding, smelting, mining), dentists and dental technicians (mercury amalgam), artists working with certain pigments, and those in the demolition or renovation of old buildings (lead paint).

  • Residential Exposure: Individuals living near industrial sites, landfills, coal-fired power plants, or in areas with known contaminated water or soil. Those living in older homes with lead pipes or lead-based paint are also candidates.

  • Hobbyists: People involved in stained-glass making (lead solder), shooting firearms at indoor ranges (lead dust), or certain types of pottery glazing.

3. Patients Undergoing Detoxification or Chelation Therapy:

  • Baseline Testing: To establish a baseline level of toxic metals before beginning a treatment protocol.

  • Monitoring Progress: To objectively measure the effectiveness of chelation therapy or nutritional detox programs over time, as the hair can show a reduction in excreted metals.

4. Children with Risk of Developmental Issues:

  • Pica Risk: Young children who have a history of pica (eating non-food items like dirt or paint chips) are at high risk for lead poisoning.

  • Developmental Delays: Unexplained developmental delays, learning disabilities, or behavioral problems (like ADHD) can sometimes be linked to heavy metal burden, making hair analysis a useful, non-invasive screening tool.

5. Individuals Concerned about Dietary Exposure:

  • Those who consume large amounts of certain types of fish and seafood (potential for mercury and arsenic).

  • People concerned about heavy metals in foods like rice (arsenic), certain spices, or cocoa products.
