Nigerian doctor, Ajayi, is a world champion in Angiology

A Nigerian doctor and Chief Medical Director (CMD) at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Ido-Ekiti (FETHI), Ebenezer Adekunle Ajayi, has been announced as the winner of the world championship in Angiology out of 86 countries that participated.

Angiology (more frequently referred to as vascular medicine in the United States) is the medical speciality which studies the diseases of the circulatory system and of the lymphatic system, i.e., arteries, veins and lymphatic vessels, and diseases.

The field of vascular medicine or Angiology is a field that deals with preventing, diagnosing and treating vascular and blood vessel-related diseases.

Dr. Ebenezer Adekunle Ajayi is now recognized as the Father of Modern Macular Hole in Angiology. The purpose of the award is to identify brilliant scientists and academics around the world through world championships.

Ajayi’s research article was adjudged the best among 5,238 nominations from 86 countries across the world and screened for the championship for 2018 in Angiology (Diabetics), and the Nigerian doctor is now recognized by IASR among the world’s 500 most influential experts in Angiology.

Dr Ajayi, from Igogo-Ekiti in Moba Local Government Area of Ekiti State, is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti, and the Chief Medical Director of the Federal Teaching Hospital, Ido-Ekiti.

He studied Medicine and Surgery at the University of Ilorin where he obtained his Bachelor of Medicine & Surgery in 1998.

He began his career as a House Officer between 1999 and 2000 at Federal Medical Centre, Owo in Ondo State, before proceeding to Ekiti Anglican Diocese Hospital (Ile Abiye Hospital) in Ado-Ekiti as a Senior House Officer in 2000.

Ajayi observed his national youth service at the Ajaokuta Steel Company Limited in Kogi State between 2000 and 2001. He was retained by the company as a Medical Officer due to his brilliance and dedication to duty after completion of his national service in 2001 and served in that capacity till 2003.

He was at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital, Ile-Ife (OAUTH) from 2003 to 2005 as a Registrar, and rose become a Senior Registrar in the same hospital between 2005 and 2007, after which he proceeded to the then Federal Medical Centre, Ido-Ekiti (now Federal Teaching Hospital, Ido-Ekiti) as a Consultant Physician/Cardiologist in 2008.

He moved on to join a team of vibrant young clinicians to pioneer the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital, Ado-Ekiti in late 2008 and held various administrative and programme positions, including the headship of the Department of Medicine.

Dr Ajayi pioneered the practice and training of cardiovascular medicine at the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital, Ado-Ekiti.

He was awarded the Fellowship of the West African College of Physicians (FWACP) and the American College of Physicians (FACP) in 2007 and 2015 respectively. He diversified from medicine into Business Administration in 2017 when he bagged a Master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA) from the Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti.

Dr. Ebenezer Adekunle Ajayi is a member of some professional bodies, including the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), West Africa College of Physicians, (WACP), American College of Physicians (ACP), Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN), Nigerian Cardiac Society, Nigerian Hypertension Society, Life Member Association of Resident Doctors (ARD), among others.

In his scholarly adventures, he has written and published in several local and international peer-reviewed academic journals in the field of medicine.
